Winter driving tips

Jan 18, 2022

Winter weather is coming and it’s essential to protect your fleet operations when driving in adverse weather conditions. Even the most experienced drivers can have a hard time in the winter. Reduced traction on icy roads and poor visibility makes driving a truck hazardous in the winter. There are a few steps you can take to help you and your fleet stay safe this winter.Supplies to keep in your truck for winter weather conditions:
  1. De-icer & ice scraper
  2. Flashlight & a High Visibility Jacket
  3. Jump Cables
  4. Warm Blanket and Extra Warm Clothes
  5. Bag of Salt or Sand & a Shovel
  6. Extra Food & Water
Tips for Winter Weather Conditions:
  1. Watch for black ice. Ice buildup on your windshield is a clue that conditions are favorable for black ice to develop. Slow down when approaching bridges, shady spots & overpasses as they freeze faster.
  2. Do not drive in fog if at all possible. Pull off the road until visibility is better. If you must drive, slow before entering fog. Turn on all lights. Your headlights should be on low-beams. Be prepared for emergency stops.
  3. Watch out for heavy rain. Beware of hydroplaning. Turn off cruise control & slow down. If you start to hydroplane, let off the accelerator slowly and steer straight until you regain control.
To help reduce winter driving risks, you should already be implementing a range of preventative measures – such as frequent maintenance checks and regular preventative maintenance for your trucks.
Adverse weather may be out of your control, but you can be organized and prepared to reduce both risks and possible accidents occurring in your fleet this winter. You can never be too careful when driving in the winter. If you need help on the road, visit fyxfleet.com/help for assistance.
